Welcoming Communities Database（WCD）は、熊本学園大学のデイビッド・オストマンによる研究に基づき開発されたオンライン・リソースです。本プロジェクトは、日本学術振興会（JSPS）科学研究費助成事業（科研費 21K*）および文部科学省（MEXT）の支援を受けています。
WCDは、研究者や地域の関係者のためのツールとして構想されたものであり、地方自治体における移民政策や定住支援サービスを調査・分析するための新しいリソースです。このデータベースには、地方で長期的に新しい住民を受け入れてきた地域の、歓迎活動に関わるさまざまな人々へのビデオインタビューが収められています。
WCDは、政策立案者、定住支援の実務者、雇用者、そして地域住民など、国境を越えてつながる地方コミュニティの関係者同士が、歓迎の取り組みや経験を共有できる場を提供します。複数の地方コミュニティを紹介することで、Welcoming Communities（ウェルカミング・コミュニティーズ）アプローチを導入したい自治体にとって、具体的なモデルを提示しています。
本データベースの背景には、地方での新住民受け入れの方策は、それぞれの地域が持つ固有のニーズや状況を反映しているという理解があります。WCDは、移住者を受け入れ、定着させ、長期的に関係を築いてきた地域の事例に基づいて、関係者がより実効性のある戦略を構築できるよう支援します。

About the WCD
The Welcoming Communities Database (WCD) is an online resource developed from research conducted by David Ostman at Kumamoto Gakuen University. It is supported by funding from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research and the Japan Ministry of Education (MEXT), Kakenhi 21K*****.
Conceived as a tool for researchers and community stakeholders, the WCD represents a novel resource for studying immigration policies and settlement services in rural municipalities. It contains video interviews with a wide range of individuals involved in welcoming initiatives in rural communities that have high long-term retention of newcomers. The WCD connects policymakers, settlement service workers, employers, and other members of rural communities across borders to share welcoming strategies and experiences. Profiling various rural communities, the resource provides multiple models for municipalities wishing to implement a Welcoming Communities approach.
The creation of the WCD is grounded in the understanding that newcomer welcoming strategies in rural areas necessarily reflect each community's unique needs and circumstances. The WCD enables community stakeholders to design informed strategies based on the examples of communities that have successfully attracted, settled, and retained newcomers.
